Sunday's cool change drops temperature

Temperatures in parts of Victoria’s north dropped more than seven degrees in just half an hour on Sunday afternoon, as a cold front swept across the state.

Kyabram’s weather station recorded a temperature of 34.3°C at 2.30pm but by 3pm it had plummeted to 27.1°C.

Temperatures continued to cool before stabilising at about 21°C by 4pm.

The onset of the cool change was also accompanied by northerly and westerly wind gusts of up to 60km/h.

Comprehensive Bureau of Meteorology data for Echuca-Moama is not available.

The Weather Channel senior meteorologist Tom Saunders said the chill was part a cold front that swept across south-eastern Australia, which saw temperatures in many centres fall as much as 10 degrees below the February average.

Melbourne was roasting at 30˚C at 3pm Sunday but fell 14˚C in less than two hours as gusty, northerly winds above 90 km/h shifted to a cold south-westerly.

The cool spell will continue to the weekend, with competitors and fans at the Southern 80 ski race set to enjoy mild temperatures and light winds.

Echuca forecasts show a maximum of just 25°C and a shower or two for Saturday, while Sunday will be mostly sunny and see temperatures heat up marginally to 27°C.
