Member for Murray Sharman Stone has said she would be keen to step into the role of the next speaker in the House of Representatives.By Trent Horneman
Member for Murray Sharman Stone has thrown her hat into the ring to become the next speaker in the House of Representatives.
Dr Stone declared her interest in the key role, as Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott begins to piece together his new cabinet.
Among others to show interest are veteran Queensland MP Bruce Scott and West Australian Don Randall.
Dr Stone said she was keen to step into the role and hoped Mr Abbott would pick someone specifically.
‘‘It is an important role. I have seen in parliament the disgust and despair in visitors, especially school groups, who witness two hours of question time at parliament,’’ she said.
‘‘I am sure the behaviour in the house is part of people’s cynicism toward the government.
‘‘Tony Abbott has too many people in his shadow ministry for the positions available. I hope that he does not offer the speaker’s role as a soft landing for someone who misses out.’’
Dr Stone said while some electorates still hung in the balance, she would have to wait for an announcement.
She said the party could meet on Friday to discuss positions.
‘‘It could take some time while until all seats are settled, particularly Sophie’s (Mirabella), as she held a seat in the shadow ministry,’’ she said.
Dr Stone has been Member for Murray since 1996.
In that time, she has had parliamentary secretary positions and was promoted to Workplace Participation Minister in 2006-07.
She has served as a shadow minister during the past six years in opposition.
