A story about Echuca's dangerous Hare and Heygarth streets intersection prompted road users to share their experiences of the intersection on social media last week.By Renee Thompson
Dozens of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians took to the Riverine Herald’s Facebook page last week to share their stories of accidents and near misses at the notorious Heygarth and Hare street intersection in Echuca.
The feedback was in response to a story last Wednesday about a VicRoads investigation into the intersection after a Campaspe Shire-backed petition called for upgrades.
The Facebook post, which prompted readers to share their own close calls at the intersection, saw readers share comment after comment about their concerns and experiences.
A few said they had been involved in accidents at the intersection, with one driver revealing how she almost ended up in Forty Winks on the Hare St corner.
‘‘I nearly went through Forty Winks window with someone crashing into me while in my sister’s (at the time) new car. I was so lucky that there wasn’t any oncoming traffic in the next lane. Something needs to be done before someone gets seriously hurt,’’ Liv wrote.
Another recalled a near miss involving her car and a motorbike, as well as several scary near misses as a pedestrian.
‘‘Yes, I nearly hit someone on a motorbike at this intersection. Not to mention nearly being hit by cars on several occasions trying to cross the road,’’ Jessica wrote.
Motorcyclist Darren provided some insight as to what it was like to be a frequent user of Heygarth St.
‘‘This is the most dangerous intersection in Echuca easily. On a motorcycle it is nerve-racking every single time you travel along Heygarth St. Only yesterday a car almost took me out turning into Hare St (and I was) on a loud Harley Davidson with (my) headlight on,’’ he wrote.
Other vulnerable road users such as cyclists and school children also got a mention.
‘‘While my daughter was doing a project for school, she sat and counted cars at the intersection. In a 25-minute period we counted seven near misses, including kids on bikes,’’ Karen wrote.
Some used the post to warn other road users about avoiding the intersection altogether, while one commenter, Anne, neatly summed up the general sentiment.
‘‘That intersection has needed a roundabout since Adam was a boy. It’s shocking,’’ she wrote.
