Parks Victoria has again refused to set up a mini-transfer station at Torrumbarry during this year’s summer tourist season.
Campaspe Shire has worked with Parks Victoria to address the issue of campers dumping waste along the river.
Parks Victoria ran a mini transfer station in 2011-12, but has not continued with it because of financial constraints.
When the transfer station was in operation, residents claimed it received 10 tonnes of waste a day.
Residents were concerned last year when the system was not used.
While Parks Victoria uses the ‘‘carry in, carry out’’ policy for campers along the Murray River, residents claimed Campaspe Shire skips were overflowing and rubbish was dumped at the entrance to the forest, along roadsides and at campsites during the peak season.
Campaspe Shire’s People and Place general manager Paul McKenzie said the shire continued to negotiate with Parks Victoria.
‘‘Council has been working with Parks Victoria to address the issue of camper’s waste along the Murray River, particularly during peak tourist periods,’’ he said.
‘‘Council has continued to advocate to Parks Victoria the need to have a temporary transfer station, as provided in 2011-12, or to implement other suitable waste solutions however has received notification that the transfer station will not be occurring in the coming year.
‘‘Council will place skips at four locations, Torrumbarry Roadhouse, Gunbower Recreation Reserve, Victoria Park, and Echuca East Boat Ramp, to collect waste for the peak tourist periods.’’
