The new dates for the 2014 YMCA Murray Marathon have been confirmed.
YMCA Victoria and the Murray Marathon Management Committee announced the new dates today as being from November 24 to 28.
The decision comes after long and thorough consultation with the wider paddling community, Murray region residents and other key stakeholders including local governments, canoe clubs and schools.
The marathon will still maintain the five, three and one-day options, with a change to the one-day option where paddlers will be able to nominate any day over the five days on which to undertake the one day challenge.
YMCA Victoria’s acting chief executive Stephen Bendle said it had not been easy to find new time to run the event that would please everyone.
‘‘The Murray Marathon is a much loved and treasured event but the very plain reality for all of us is that fewer people are coming to the event in its current timeframe,’’ he said.
‘‘We are optimistic that the earlier timeframe will work; it is in a window of time where other similar events have had continued and sustained success and opens up options for a whole new group of participants who find the Christmas/New Year time too difficult.’’
