Movember was launched in Echuca on Friday with community members throwing their support behind the annual event.By Ivy Wise
Men’s health was the topic of discussion at the Movember launch in Echuca on Friday.
The event, held at Cunningham Downs, aimed to raise awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.
Bendigo Health prostate cancer specialist nurse David Heath discussed diagnosis and treatment, Echuca pharmacist Shane Weller spoke about his recent bike ride fundraiser for prostate cancer and Echuca Regional Health health promotions officer Danielle Paterson provided information about nutrition, physical activity and mental health.
As part of Movember, several community members have created the Modacious team and will be growing moustaches during the month.
Twelve members, who have committed their top lip for 30 hairy days, have raised nearly $900 as of Friday.
Murray Human Service’s Phillip Evans, who is one of the organisers, encouraged people to join the cause.
‘‘Becoming a Mo Bro and joining the Modacious team, you would be a walking, talking billboard raising awareness and prompting conversations around the often ignored issue of men’s health,’’ he said.
You can follow their journey through the Riv for Mo progress mug shoots.

Money raised will go towards initiatives that support prostate cancer, such as awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and beyond mental illness and research programs.
