Echuca’s Laundry Mates laundromat is just waiting on formal approval from Energy Safe Victoria before it begins operating, according to its project manager.By Ivy Wise
Echuca’s Laundry Mates could start operating by the end of this week.
Project manager PJ McCoy, from disability services provider Echuca Discoveries, said the laundromat would be approved once Energy Safe Victoria signed off on the building, which was expected on Thursday.
‘‘The guys are so eager to get going,’’ Mr McCoy said.
‘‘The most exciting part will be when they start charging for their work.
‘‘It will give them a real sense of achievement.’’
People with disabilities own and operate the laundromat on the corner of High and Pakenham streets.
‘‘Yes, it is a profit-making business, but who is profiting? People with disabilities,’’ Mr McCoy said.
‘‘They’ve been given an opportunity and are trying to break down barriers.’’
Participants have started doing some work, ironing and washing, as part of their training.
Mr McCoy’s wife and co-project manager Sharnee McCoy said 27 washing collection and delivery contracts were secured, with another 13 positions available.
‘‘Once these are full, we can’t offer anything else,’’ she said.
‘‘We have (contracts with) hairdressers, motels, massage clinics, resorts and nursing homes.’’
Other services include a coin-operated laundromat, washing, drying, folding and ironing.
