Kris Pogorelec has donated a 140cc pit bike to Echuca brothers Jonathan and Thomas Morphett after they had their bike stolen two weeks ago.By Trent Horneman
Two weeks ago, thieves stolen a pair of motorbikes from the front yard of Thomas and Jonathan Morphett’s Echuca South home.
At the time Thomas, 11, said the thieves had stolen their dreams when they stole the motorbike.
On Friday, their dreams were made, when Echuca’s Kris Pogorelec donated a bike for the brothers.
‘‘I read the story in the paper and I really felt for them, especially since they had worked hard to save money to buy the bike,’’ he said.
‘‘I have always had a job from a young age and I could appreciate what it would have meant for them to have their bikes taken from their yard.
‘‘It was just sitting in a storage shed, I was not using it and I wanted to see a couple of kids get enjoyment out of it.’’
Mr Pogorelec handed over the bike to Thomas and Jonathan in Moama on Friday.
The pair were left speechless when they saw their new bike.
Mother Julie Morphett said Mr Pogorelec’s generosity was overwhelming.
‘‘I think it has restored their faith in people,’’ she said.
‘‘It shows them that there are still some decent people left in the world.
‘‘I am just ecstatic. We have always told the boys to work for what they have.’’
Mrs Morphett said after a story appeared in last week’s Riverine Herald, she had received an outpouring of support, as well as anger for those who stole the bike.
‘‘We had people coming up to us saying they had seen a red ute pull up in front of our house when the bike was stolen,’’ she said.
‘‘Unfortunately we had not been able to locate the boys’ missing bikes.’’
The brothers were excited to have a new bike and said they looked forward to taking it for a ride with their friends.
‘‘We think he is the nicest man we know,’’ Thomas said.
