District residents are encouraged to get on their bikes this month in the fight against children’s cancer.
Echuca’s Kevin L’Huillier bought himself a bike to take part in the Great Cycle Challenge, which is about getting fit and raising funds towards research into treatments and a cure for childhood cancer.
The national Children’s Medical Research Institute fundraising initiative asks riders to take on a personal cycling challenge to pedal throughout October.
People can register at www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au, with your kilometres and progress displayed on your personal rider profile page, which you can customise with photos, videos and a personal messages.
Kevin has some serious pedalling to do to reach his target of 150km by the end of the month.
He has raised $500 so far, but is hoping others will follow in his footsteps.
‘‘I wanted to start riding and then this came up and I thought it’s a good way to get fit and healthy while raising money for a good cause,’’ he said.
Kevin lost his partner Jan Bradley to cancer 12 months ago and has been helping to raise money for the new Echuca hospital, Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Cancer Council ever since.
‘‘Money for cancer research rewards the whole community and brings benefits for a long time to come,’’ he said.
