Echuca father Brett Hopson, who is cycling from Echuca to Melbourne this weekend, is raising funds for HeartKids Victoria.By Jess Craig
Brett Hopson donned his lycra and helmet and headed off on the ride of his life on Thursday.
Mr Hopson is riding from Echuca to Melbourne to raise money for HeartKids Victoria and is expected to arrive at the Royal Children’s Hospital tomorrow.
Mr Hopson’s wife Kylie and their five daughters, two which have heart conditions, will act as his support crew.
Brittany, 10, and Shanae, 5 have a ‘hole’ in their hearts, or ventricular septal defect, a congenital heart condition resulting in an abnormal opening in the dividing wall between the organ’s main pumping chambers.
The Hopson family is waiting to see if their youngest daughter Sharlotte, 1, has the same condition.
Mekaela, 12 and Alicia, 8, are both free of the disease.
‘‘I’ve raised over my target of $2000, and that is fantastic,’’ Mr Hopson said yesterday.
‘‘I’m very grateful to everyone in the community who has supported me.
‘‘I’m aiming for $3000 now.’’
Mr Hopson was farewelled at Echuca East Primary School by his family, supporters and students, who donned their pajamas for a special fundraising day.
‘‘I’m very proud of him,’’ Mrs Hopson said.
‘‘Hopefully he’s been training hard enough.’’
