Echuca Community for the Aged gave its maintenance supervisor Rob Southwell a big hand toward hitting his fundraising target for a charity bike ride early next year.
Chief executive Colin Price gave Mr Southwell a $1000 donation for his 800km ride through Thailand as part of the Hands Across the Water charity ride in January.
As part of the ride, Mr Southwell will raise more than $10,000 to help the charity set up in the wake of the 2006 tsunami in the region.
The company’s donation comes on the back of several fundraisers during the year.
‘‘I am confident I will reach the target, I am more concerned about preparing for a ride,’’ he said.
Mr Southwell said while he was reasonably fit, he was not a bike rider and had to train for long periods in the saddle to prepare.
‘‘I have been riding about 25km a time. I have gone from doing that once a week to three or four times a week. We will cover 800km in eight days, so we will ride for 100km a day up some pretty steep terrain for some of it,’’ he said.
Mr Southwell was inspired to tackle the ride after hearing a police forensic investigator talk about the recovery effort in the region following massive tsunamis in the area.
‘‘It is a real motivation for you to get out there and do it. I am looking forward to riding into the orphanage on the last day,’’ he said.
Mr Southwell takes part in the ride in early January and said he looked forward to the experience.
