After four years in the region, Echuca Salvation Army Lieutenants Mark and Belinda Smith are moving on, taking up a position in Burnie, Tasmania.By Renee Thompson
Echuca Salvation Army Lieutenants Mark and Belinda Smith are relocating to Tasmania at the end of the year.
Lieutenant Mark Smith made the announcement while speaking to the Riv last week about the fires which destroyed the Salvos sheds earlier this month.
He and his family have been based in Echuca-Moama for about four years.
‘‘The placements are generally only two to three years, but because of the (January 2011) floods and everything, we got a longer appointment,’’ he said.
Lieutenant Smith said he found out about the transfer to Burnie, Tasmania, about three weeks ago.
‘‘We’ve got to be over there by January 8,’’ he said.
The family has been actively involved in the Salvos’ clean-up process after the shed fires and will be busy with fire rebuilding efforts and community events, including the Christmas Appeal toy run, until they leave.
‘‘We’ve got to fit all that in before we go,’’ he said.
He said it was common for Salvos to be up and moved around, but it would still be hard to say goodbye to Echuca-Moama.
‘‘I love the place, I reckon it’s a really nice community,’’ he said.
‘‘(There’s) very mixed emotions, you’ve done the real hard yards with people.’’
He said the new Echuca Salvation Army Lieutenants would be David and Jennifer Shrimpton, an older couple from the top end.
The pair will take over duties in Echuca on January 8.
