Echuca polce called off the pursuit of a motorbike because of safety concerns yesterday.

By Monique Preston

A police pursuit of a motorbike travelling at 160km/h in Echuca streets yesterday morning was called off after about 15 seconds for safety reasons.

Echuca police Sergeant John Trebilcock said NSW police told Echuca police at 7.53am of a motorcyclist travelling at excessive speeds and failing to stop on the Cobb Hwy about 5km north of Moama.

Two minutes later, Echuca police tried to intercept the motorcyclist on Ogilvie Ave.

Rather than stopping, the motorcyclist sped up, with police clocking the speed at 160km/h, Sgt Trebilcock said.

‘‘A pursuit started, but was called off 15 seconds later due to excessive speed and unnecessary risk to members of the public, police and the motorcycle rider,’’ he said.

At 8.15am, police were told the motorcyclist was in Fehring Lane and, on investigation, spotted it turning right on to the Northern Hwy.

‘‘Police did not pursue the motorcycle for safety reasons this time,’’ Sgt Trebilcock said.

The motorcyclist managed to evade police and was last seen turning back on to Ogilvie Ave.

Sgt Trebilcock said police received half a dozen calls from the public about the motorcyclist.

‘‘Police appreciate the information from the public,’’ he said.

The motorbike is described as a black 1200 Kawasaki road bike with no registration plates.

The rider was wearing a black helmet, black jacket and black pants.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact Echuca police on 54822255 or Crime Stoppers on 180033000.
