BREAKING - Rocchina D’Angelo was elected to Campaspe Shire Council today during a countback.By Jess Craig
Rocchina D’Angelo is Campaspe Shire Council’s newest councillor.
Mrs D’Angelo was elected during a countback today, after a seat in the Kyabram-Deakin Ward became available last month following Robert Danieli’s resignation.
Mr Danieli resigned to pursue a Senate seat at this year’s federal election.
After preferences were delivered, Mrs D’Angelo won the countback with an absolute majority of 866 votes.
Countbacks occur for local councils when the vacancy to be filled is in a multi-councillor ward or unsubdivided municipality.
Mrs D’Angelo was up against Peter Berner and John Zobec for the seat, though none of them attended the countback.
Mrs D’Angelo polled 812 (11.86 per cent) at the October 2012 election, the highest number after elected candidates Mr Danieli and Cr Neil Pankhurst.
Mr Berner was just behind Mrs D’Angelo with 758 votes (11.07 per cent).
Mr Zobec had 767 votes (8.28 per cent).
Voters did not need to vote again in a countback as the ballot papers from the previous election were used.
Mrs D’Angelo has 48 hours to accept the position.
