A change in plans to the annual Tour of the Murray will see Campaspe Shire host a full day and stage of racing.By Trent Horneman
Some of Australia’s best road cyclists will spend a full day racing in Campaspe Shire next week as part of the annual Tour of the Murray.
A change in plans has seen the shire host a full stage of racing, which starts and ends in Echuca, taking in Lockington, Rochester, Timmering and Nanneella.
Stage 5 of the tour will hit Echuca on Friday, September 6, tackling a 95.52km.
Campaspe Shire’s good luck follows a $10,000 donation and in-kind support to race organisers to help run the event.
Cr Paul Jarman said the change was brilliant news for the shire.
‘‘It’s an important regional event which attracts visitors from across the entire Murray region in a traditionally quiet time of the year,’’ Cr Jarman said.
‘‘The tour is a colourful and exciting event that provides spectacular roadside viewing for both residents and visitors to the shire and now residents in the towns of Lockington, Rochester and Nanneella — and those along the way can get in on the action too.
‘‘The event will provide our region with an increased media profile, thanks to live digital streaming of the event to a community of about 30,000 followers, as well as dedicated television programming.
‘‘The event itself is expected to attract a travelling group of 1020 people.’’
Cr Jarman said council was working with schools to have students cheer cyclists from the roadside.
The 95.52km race will travel to Lockington and Rochester, then head north through Nanneella to Echuca.
