An attempted sexual assault in an Echuca car park earlier this month has prompted plenty of conversation in the community about car park lighting.

Riverine Herald photographer Holly Curtis photographed four central Echuca car parks on Wednesday night at 6pm.

The four car parks, in High, Sturt, Nish and Anstruther streets are managed by Campaspe Shire.

Lighting ranged from quite bright to almost total darkness at a time many workers walk to their vehicles.

The Riverine Herald contacted Campaspe Shire yesterday for an update on car park safety and lighting.

The shire is already undertaking a safety audit of the Anstruther St car park, in conjunction with Victoria Police.

Shire prosperity general manager Anne Howard last week said, depending on the findings of the safety audit, the outcomes may be used elsewhere also.

It is also exploring the option of CCTV.

A shire spokeswoman said staff would be able to provide a further update on Monday.
