Campaspe Shire staff will start working on how to implement new anti-smoking laws passed in Victorian Parliament last week.
On Thursday, the Victorian Government supported changes to the Tobacco Act, banning smoking within a 10m radius of outdoor playgrounds, skate parks, pools and sporting venues during junior events.
Campaspe Shire’s people and place general manager Paul McKenzie said the shire was aware of the legislation.
‘‘Staff have already commenced to research how to implement the legislation as well as discussions with other municipalities,’’ he said.
‘‘Initially our role will focus on informing and educating the public regarding the changes to legislation and then to work through how this may be monitored.
‘‘Smoking is already banned at all Shire of Campaspe public pools, both indoor and outdoor.’’
The bans will take effect on April 1.
Health Minister David Davis said the government led the way to create smoke-free areas.
‘‘Smoking will now be banned at thousands of venues and locations across our state where children congregate and enjoy health outdoor activities,’’ he said.
‘‘We will undertake an extensive public awareness and community education campaign and make no smoking signs available for local councils to install.’’
Mr Davis said about 4000 people died in Victoria each year from smoking and the cost in health and productivity was as high as $2.4
