Call for New Year's Eve event in Echuca-Moama

The time is right for a private enterprise to create a community New Year’s Eve event, according to Echuca-Moama Tourism chief Pete White.
Riverine Herald Facebook followers suggested the town needed something, especially for young families.
Campaspe Shire councillor Emma Bradbury also joined the chorus of people wanting to see a community event to end the year.
Cr Bradbury said she was surprised there was no official gathering to mark the year’s end.
‘‘I was on a houseboat with friends and I heard popping of fireworks, but couldn’t see anything. There was no official fireworks display,’’ she said.
‘‘I think it is something that council should look at. I think it is prudent that council has this discussion.
‘‘There are plenty of people in the community for new year’s and it is a good opportunity to showcase the region with a civic celebration.’’
Mr White said more than 100 people inquired at Echuca’s Visitor Information Centre on Tuesday as to community New Year’s Eve celebrations.
He said while many would see shires as responsible for hosting an event, he believed it would be better suited to a private promoter.
‘‘There is clearly a market demand for a celebration on New Year’s Eve. The target audience would be for young families,’’ he said.
‘‘It is a great opportunity for a private enterprise, rather than being the responsibility of council.’’
Mr White said he would see no problem with a private promoter charging people to attend a New Year’s Eve gathering.
‘‘Providing there was quality entertainment for people,’’ he said.
Mr White said Murray Esplanade, the Aquatic Reserve and Hopwood Gardens would be ideal locations for a community event.
