Echuca’s Horizon Committee raised a total of $50,000 from last week’s Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch at Echuca Harness Racing Club.By Trent Horneman
A sociable Friday afternoon for 300 Echuca men has helped raise $50,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Echuca’s Horizon Committee raised the total from last week’s Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch at Echuca Harness Racing Club.
President Grant Stobaus said the event, in its second year, was well supported.
‘‘Our event is as much about creating prostate cancer awareness as it is about fundraising,’’ he said.
‘‘Chris Tuohey’s insight into his prostate cancer journey was very informative and hopefully will encourage more men to see their GPs and take greater responsibility for their health.’’
Mr Stobaus said while there was a healthy message, there was also plenty of fun on the day.
Former Test cricketers Damien Fleming, Merv Hughes and Rodney Hogg headlined the event, sharing entertaining stories from their days wearing the baggy green.
‘‘The sensational success of the afternoon will enable Horizon to provide $50,000 to Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia this year,’’ Mr Stobaus said.
‘‘Horizon also continues funding of its National Nursing Scholarship Program to better equip nurses to assist men with prostate cancer.’’
Mr Stobaus said the committee had already received interest in next year’s event.
‘‘We’ve already received bookings for next year’s event, which will be even bigger and capped at 350,’’ he said.
