A list of events across the district this Australia Day.

Murray Shire

Mathoura will host the day at the Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre lawns on Cobb Hwy at 7.45am. There will be a free barbecue breakfast, entertainment and children’s activities. The official ceremony and presentation of awards will follow at 8.45am.

Campaspe Shire

Echuca will hold its Australia Day celebrations at Aquatic Reserve on Heygarth St, from 7.50am to 10am. There will be musical entertainment, a citizenship ceremony, the presentation of awards, a guest speaker and a barbecue breakfast. The Australia Day ambassador will be radio and television personality John Blackman.

Girgarre will hold a flag-raising ceremony at Girgarre Reserve on Winter Rd at 8.45am. Presentations, awards and a barbecue breakfast will take place from 10.30am in Girgarre memorial hall on Morgan Crescent. The Australia Day ambassador is marketing and media veteran and past AFL and VFL commentator Don Hyde.

Gunbower will hold a community breakfast from 7.30am until 9.30am at the angling club jetty at Gunbower recreation reserve, Gunbower Island Rd. A flag-raising ceremony and morning tea will be held at the Gunbower memorial hall on Murray Valley Hwy at 10am. The Australia Day ambassador will be campaigner for diabetes research and Victoria’s 2012 Senior Australian of the Year finalist Gwennyth Baker.

Koyuga will hold a flag-raising ceremony, yabby races and a community barbecue from 5.30pm until 9pm at Koyuga hall on O’Dae Rd.

Kyabram will hold an Australia Day breakfast, flag-raising ceremony and presentation of awards from 7.30am until 9.30am at Kyabram Memorial Gardens, Allan St. The Australia Day ambassador is one of Australia’s longest-serving newspaper columnists and author, Lawrence Mooney.

Ky Valley will hold a flag-raising ceremony and barbecue lunch from 12.30pm to 3pm at the Ky Valley community park and pool, 519 Scobie Rd. There will be games for the family and the pool will be open to the public.

Lockington will have its breakfast and flag-raising ceremony from 8am until 11am at the Lions/Apex Park on Lockington Rd. There will then be a kids fishing competition on Lockington channel, Singer Rd at 1pm. The Australia Day ambassador will be police and emergency services veteran Bill Horman.

Milloo will host an Australia Day dinner at Milloo hall on Milloo Hall Rd at 7pm.

Rochester will have a breakfast at 7.30am at Lions Park on the corner of Echuca Rd and Elizabeth St. At 9.30am a flag-raising ceremony will take place with an awards ceremony at the RSL Garden on Victoria St. There will also be an Australia Day dinner and presentations from 7pm at the Rochester Sports Club and Racecourse Recreation Reserve on the Northern Hwy. The Australia Day ambassador will be Victoria’s 2005 Young Australian of the Year and co-founder of the Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning Program Matthew Albert.

Tongala will host its flag-raising ceremony at the soundshell at 11am and then move across to the Tongala public hall, both on Mangan St, for award presentations, festivities, a citizenship ceremony and barbecue lunch. The Australia Day ambassador will be hotel and hospitality veteran Bill Bell.


Wyuna will host its flag-raising ceremony, barbecue tea and a guest speaker from 6.30pm until 10pm at the Wyuna memorial hall on Alfred Rd.

Gannawarra Shire

Cohuna will host a free breakfast from 8am at Garden Park, King George St. The Australia Day ambassador will be tourism veteran and Echuca resident Craig Opie.

Leitchville will host a free barbecue dinner from 6.30pm at Trigg Park, King George St.
