A ram from the Wanganella Stud has taken out the top ram award at Deniliquin's Elders Riverina Sheep Expo.By Zoe McMaugh
Wanganella Stud has taken out the coveted Elders Riverina Ram of the Year for 2013.
Judge Guy Evans said it was difficult to choose between the Wanganella ram and the Willandra ram which came in second.
FSF Falkiner stud manager Angus Munro showed the winning ram, Wanganella 19, which was described by Mr Evans as having a stable length and very white wool.
Wanganella 19 had recent wins in the medium wool section in Bendigo, and is also an awarded sire.
Wanganella is part of the group of studs owned by FSF Falkiner.
While coming a close second to Wanganella, the Jerilderie based Willandra still went home with a top award on Friday.
Stud owner Ross Wells won Riverina Ewe of the Year earlier in the day.
Also judged by Mr Evans, the Willandra ewe was described as having good cover and length of body and being a ‘‘quite impressive’’ ewe.
The Performance Ram and Ewe of the Year titles were judged by Ted Beattie.
Mr Beattie chose a White Suffolk from Wattle Park stud at Finley for the ram section.
He said there was a ‘‘tremendous line-up’’ of rams in the sections, and that there was little between the top four.
In the ewe section, Mr Beattie judged a ‘‘very upstanding’’ Poll Dorsett ewe from Graythorn Stud at Mathoura as the stand-out.
He said it was muscling which separated it from the ‘‘feminine’’ Border Leicester in second place.
The Northern Clip of the Year was also judged at the expo on Friday and was won by February’s best clip from Budgewah, near Hay.
As well as sheep and fleece judging, other activities at the event included a fashion parade and wool and art exhibition.
