After a long summer break, most local students started a new school year yesterday.

Eastern District schools such as Mayrung and Blighty actually started back a week earlier, with the latter enjoying a spike in enrolments.

Blighty Public School welcomed six new kindergarten students this year.

They are Lyle Ackers, Karolina Kurekova, Seth Morris, Kieren Knill, Jessica Hanmer and Harry McIlwain.

Blighty teacher Karen Conallin said this was a big intake, bringing the school’s numbers up to 30 students.

‘‘It’s the biggest intake for the school in more than three years.

‘‘The start has been fantastic and we are having a family barbecue this Friday,’’ she said.

Drivers are reminded that with the return of school is the return of enforced school speed limit zones.

These speed zones are an important factor in keeping children safe before and after school.

The 40km/h speed limit is in place between 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm in the relevant sign-posted areas on school days.
