State angling leaders review the good work implemented by the Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club.By Cass Savellis
Efforts to restore local waterways and attract more visitors to the town has been a priority of the Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club.
The club has been busy erecting signs at various locations along the Edward River in Deniliquin in an effort to educate anglers about native fish species and good fishing practices.
The club has also been purchasing and releasing fingerlings back into the river for many years to help replenish fish stocks, and therefore attract more anglers to town.
Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club president Andrew Hall took NSW Recreational Fishing Trust (RFT) member Kevin McKinnon and NSW Recreational Fisheries manager Alistair McBurnie on a local tour on Tuesday to highlight the club’s good work.
Mr McKinnon said the overall aim of these projects, which are jointly funded by the NSW RFT, was to ‘‘ improve recreational fishing in New South Wales.’’
There are 11 educational angler signs along the Edward River at locations including McLean Beach, Camp Four Post, Big 4 Caravan Park and the Boat Club.
This is an initiative of the Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club in conjunction with NSW Department of Primary Industries, NSW RFT, Murray CMA, and Deniliquin Play on the Plains Committee.
‘‘Money from the purchasing of fishing licences is being used to restore the river and for educational purposes,’’ said Mr Hall, who hopes more tourists will be attracted to the area for a quieter and plentiful fishing environment.
The annual Deniliquin Fishing Classic, which is the club’s major fundraiser, is on February 16 and 17.
