The final regional meeting for the Museums & Galleries 2013 Standards Program was held at the Peppin Heritage Centre in Deniliquin on Friday.
Representatives from 16 museums across the Murray and western Riverina region attended the debrief and celebratory event run by Museums and Galleries NSW.
The Deniliquin Historical Society and Deniliquin’s Peppin Heritage Centre have both taken part in the Standards Program this year.
Museums and Galleries NSW manager of museum programs and collections Tamara Lavrencic said all the participants were passionate about their community.
‘‘We’ve had all ages of volunteers in the program and they have all been great,’’ she said.
‘‘We think of these local museums as a keeping place for their community history.’’
The Standards Program started in February, with an aim for museums to focus on their policies and practices.
‘‘At the beginning of the program, the museums completed a self-review based on a national standards survey to look at how they operate,’’ Ms Lavrencic said.
‘‘They also underwent peer reviews to help identify strengths and weaknesses and then identify their priorities.
‘‘The program is also about developing ideas including marketing plans, visitor surveys and new public programs within museums to increase volunteers.’’
At the celebratory event, each museum received a report of recommendations and a certificate of completion. The Standards Program was funded by Arts NSW.
