The first baby of the New Year arrived on Wednesday ... even if she was a little late!

Carae Maddisyn Barnett was supposed to be a 2011 baby, but decided that 2012 would be for her.

Her mum, Lisa Poka, said Carae was due on December 29.

‘‘Any pains I had from the 29th to the 4th ... I thought she was coming.

‘‘I came into hospital at 2.30 Wednesday morning and she was born at four minutes to five.

‘‘It is quite an honour to have the first baby of the New Year. I was just like ‘wow’.

‘‘My nephew was the first baby of the New Year in 1997 and his birthday is today (yesterday),’’ Lisa said.

Carae is a daughter for Lisa and her partner Justin Barnett.

The newborn weighed 4040 grams (8lb13oz) and was welcomed into the world at Deniliquin Hospital. She is a little sister for Ava (3) and Brydy (20 months), and a granddaughter for Welch and Sharmane Poka of Kalgoorlie (WA) and Brendan and Sally Barnett of Cobram.

Lisa and her family received a gift from local woman Gail McLean for having the first baby of the New Year.

Mrs McLean has been welcoming Deniliquin Hospital’s first baby with gifts for the past 24 years. She received a hamper when she gave birth to her son, Myles, and has continued the tradition.

Unfortunately, Mrs McLean was unable to deliver the package personally, but Lisa and her family were delighted with what they received.
