By Hannah NicholsLocal shoppers have helped to raise more than $2500 for the local fire services as part of the Central IGA Community Chest.
Deniliquin NSW Fire and Rescue and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) each received $1345.75 from the popular local supermarket’s fundraising program.
The money represents a percentage of all IGA products sold at the Deniliquin supermarket over the past year.
Central IGA has contributed its Community Chest allocation to the fire brigades since the program began in 2002.
Fire and Rescue Captain Bill Muirhead said his organisation already has plans for the money.
‘‘We hope to use it for a big marquee for the hazmat vehicle, which is a designated (work) station.
‘‘At jobs requiring the hazmat vehicle we can be there for a day and the firefighters need somewhere to be able to sit and relax.’’
The ‘hazmat’ vehicle is required for situations involving hazardous materials.
RFS treasurer Chantelle O’Loughlin expects their money will go toward the organisation’s new station at Deniliquin Airport.
‘‘New equipment for the new station makes it easier on the volunteers,’’ she said.
IGA Community Chest sponsorship coordinator Corina Beames presented the cheques and thanked local shoppers for supporting the program.
‘‘I would encourage customers to buy IGA products and thanks to all the customers who have.’’
