Helen and Sam to represent Deniliquin
Helen McMillan has been chosen as Deniliquin's Miss Show Girl and Sam Callanan has won the Deniliquin Rural Achiever competition.
By Zoe McMaugh & Tyla HarringtonHelen McMillan and Sam Callanan will represent the Deniliquin Pastoral and Agricultural Society for the next 12 months, as the Deniliquin Showgirl and Deniliquin Rural Achiever respectively.
Both will compete on behalf of the Show Society in the 2014 competitions for both events.
In the meantime, they get the opportunity to be involved with the show and learn more about how it is run.
Helen was up against some still competition in the Showgirl section, with Gabi Donald coming second and Stevie Hannan third.
Helen has recently returned to the local area after completing an agricultural degree at university, and hopes to put her qualifications to good use in the region.
Helping to select the winner was local milliner Danica Erard, who sponsored the event along with Country Cottage Antiques, and Griffith Showgirl Claire Walker.
Helen will now make an appearance on behalf of the Show Society at the Wakool Show this weekend.
In the Rural Achiever competition, Sam Callanan said he was ‘‘thrilled’’ to be recognised.
The 25 year-old works at Rodwells Deniliquin as the merchandise manager.
He has been at Rodwells for the past five years.
In that time he has completed a diploma in agronomy and commercial management.
‘‘It’s good to be recognised for achieving something in the rural sector,’’ he said.
‘‘I would like to thank the community for the opportunity to excel in the industry.’’
Mr Callanan took home a ‘Kincro Me’ toolbox valued at almost $300. The tools were from Agspares and donated on behalf of Browns Rural Supplies.
If selected by the state judges to move on, Sam will next compete at the 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show.
