DVD explains importance of water and irrigation.By Zoe McMaugh
A DVD designed to explain the importance of water and irrigation to the world has been filmed by the Murray Darling Association.
MDA upper catchment manager Adrian Wells and joint program coorindator Owen Dunlop were in Finley and Deniliquin last week with a film crew.
‘‘The DVD we’re making is to celebrate the importance of farming and irrigation,’’ Mr Wells said.
‘‘The film was originally planned as an education tool, but there is no doubt it will also have a role in cities to show people that farmers do not rape and pillage the land.
‘‘We want to highlight the farming families who are producing higher quality produce more efficiently, and highlight that we need water to do that.
‘‘We have conducted interviews with farmers, students interested in going into the industry and people in the industry.’’
Mr Wells said among the people interviewed this week were the Hawkins family at Finley, the Holm family in Blighty, and in particular Talei Holm who wants to enter into the farming sector when she has finished school, other Finley High School students, industry experts and Murray Irrigation Limited director Bruce Simpson.
Filming was done at the SunRice rice mill in Deniliquin, at Murray Irrigation Limited and at the Peppin Heritage Centre.
‘‘The DVD will be used right across the basin,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s a very positive message about the real work on the farm.
‘‘Everyone we have spoken to has been very optimistic about the future of farming and interested in the role of food security and improved on farm efficiencies.
‘‘There is a strong history in Australia of farmers being adaptive, so there is also a particular focus on the adoption of new technology.’’
The educational DVD has been heavily sponsored by SunRice and the Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils.
The DVD is expected to be launched in October.
