The Deniliquin Push Poets' workshops with local students culminated in a poetry night last week.By Cass Savellis
Students from Deniliquin South School, St Michael’s School and Edward School showcased their poetry talent at the Bush Poets Night on Wednesday.
Around 80 people flocked to the Intereach Neighbourhood Centre to listen to the students and Bush Poet members recite their favourite poetry.
Organiser Alex Allitt said the night went ‘‘wonderfully well’’.
‘‘It was a lovely night; this is the second year it’s been held.
‘‘The kids got a lot of enjoyment out of it. We wanted to teach them to bring poetry alive and they responded well.
‘‘We didn’t want to make it a competition and I think that’s why they were so happy on the night.
‘‘Our aim was to teach students to love poetry; it’s wonderful for relaxation.’’
Mr Allitt, a well known local bush poet, recited The Man from Snowy River by AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson, which was requested by an audience member on the night.
‘‘It’s an amazing poem; it’s got excitement and shades of light and dark all in one,’’ Mr Allitt said.
