A Deniliquin park has been named after the Atleys, who have been responsible for maintaning the area.By Cass Savellis
Deniliquin’s Bill and Joyce Atley were pleasantly surprised when reading last Friday’s Pastoral Times to find parkland behind their Burton St home had been named in the family’s honour.
The article pointed out that Deni Council had approved the naming of the parkland as Atley Park.
Mr Atley has been caring for the park since the family moved to nearby Renwick Crt in the mid 1980s.
‘‘When we moved here it was just a bare space with some of the rubbish left over from other houses,’’ he said.
‘‘It started when I mowed a strip of the park to drive a vehicle in, then it just kept getting bigger and bigger until I was mowing the whole park.
‘‘It’s something for me to do and I enjoy seeing the park looking nice.’’
The 79 year-old had been mowing the parkland until council took over the duties in the past decade.
Mr Atley planted all of the trees that now add life to the space and manually waters the area with a set of hoses, using his own funds to purchase gardening supplies and equipment for the park’s upkeep.
‘‘I’m very grateful to the people who nominated me, it was a lovely surprise. We had no idea until we read about it.
‘‘I’m nearly at my use-by date so I’m glad to receive the recognition while I’m still around.’’
