Deniliquin North School was abuzz with hundreds of people on Saturday for its 50th anniversary open day and pedlar’s parade.
The activities started off with a school production at the Deniliquin RSL Club on the Friday night.
North’s Got Talent was a 10-act showcase that wowed crowds as the students showed off their singing and dancing skills.
The Saturday program began with an open classroom tour with video presentations showcasing the school’s history, and the school library was turned into a museum of photographs from the past five years, proving a popular attraction with former students.
Senior students then opened up their pedlar’s parade for trading, with numerous stalls including fortune telling, face painting, a beauty salon, milkshake stand and ‘decorate your own cupcake’ stall.
P&C president Kate Butler said the day was ‘‘really fantastic’’.
‘‘The weather was excellent and the turn-out was excellent,’’ she said.
‘‘Past students and teachers came from Perth, Townsville and all over really just to attend the day.
‘‘It was very relaxed which is what the North School community is about.
‘‘The pedlar’s parade run by the kids was also a big hit – it made the day so enjoyable to see them getting involved.
‘‘The day was to reconnect but also remind everyone that the school is all about the kids.
‘‘People could see how this great school community is still continuing.’’
A highlight of the day was the official opening of the Bob Jackson Year 6 area, named after the former principal who was at North School in the 1980s.
‘‘When Mr Jackson passed away a couple of years ago he donated $10,000 to the school,’’ Ms Butler said.
‘‘This money allowed the school to create the new Year 6 area among other improvements around the grounds.’’
The area was officially opened by his wife Barbara Jackson, who was a special guest of the day.
North School principal Chris Hogan said the whole anniversary program was fantastic.
‘‘The organising committee, our great students and the teaching and ancillary staff were simply sensational in all that they did.
‘‘I can’t sing their praises highly enough. It was an event for the ages.’’
