Deniliquin musicians need a new home

Deniliquin's South West Music is still looking for a suitable home, after being moved from the Deniliquin Town Hall in 2010.

South West Music (SWM) is in need of a permanent new home.

The lease on its property in George St runs out at the end of 2013.

Even if SWM is able to renew its lease, director Cheryl Fuller said the organisation would prefer a permanent home.

‘‘We cannot afford to pay huge amounts of rent and we don’t have money to spend on renovations.

‘‘This place (George St) has its limitations but we have a roof over our head,’’ she said.

‘‘We want a premises that will allow us to undertake all our activities under the same roof.

‘‘We’re obviously going to be okay though and we will find a home.’’

Mrs Fuller has been in contact with local real estate agents, who are helping to find an appropriate location.

At the moment, SWM’s Young Musician Club is based at the Anglican Church Hall while the drum percussion teacher is forced to teach at another premises because of a lack of sound proofing.

The director said music formed an integral part of the community.

‘‘Sport is very central in this town; it would be great if music could be just as appreciated.’’

SWM has also called on Deniliquin Council to help it secure funding, which would help with securing a permanent base as well as scholarship and bursary programs.

Mrs Fuller hopes that together they can find a home.

Council started the funding campaign when it applied for Regional Development Australia (RDA) money in December, hoping to transform the Town Hall into a cultural hub where SWM would be based.

The application was unsuccessful.

SWM left the Town Hall at the end of 2010 due to an unstable front wall.

Mrs Fuller is encouraging anyone with any suggestions for a new home to contact her on 58814736.

SWM has been in Deniliquin since the 1980s and teaches music to more than 200 students.

SWM guitar players Scott Atley, Isabelle Dudley and Georgina Mildren.
