Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s rural group manager – Border, Rosemary Garthwaite, announced the development this week.
She says a contractor is expected to be on site from Monday.
Mrs Garthwaite said the layout of the new maternity unit will support the new midwifery-led model of maternity care.
The ward itself will include two multi-purpose birthing rooms.
The model of care will introduce an opportunity for early discharge, domiciliary midwife visits post-discharge, collaborative midwifery group practice, and improved links between expectant mother and the midwife.
Building works are expected to be completed in the first half of this year.
The $720,000 project has been funded by the State Government through the Rural Health Minor Works Program.
