The Deniliquin High School Year 12 class of 1993 held a reunion on the weekend.By Cass Savellis
About 60 past students of Deniliquin High School enjoyed reminiscing about their school days at a 20-year reunion held at the weekend.
The Year 12 class of 1993 had a jam-packed three-day program which included a meet and greet at the Globe Hotel on Friday night, lunch at the Exchange Hotel on Saturday and dinner and drinks at the Golf Club on Saturday night.
On Sunday, most of the former students toured the school grounds led by current teachers Robyn Richards, Brenda Norman and Peter Humphries.
Guests travelled from all over including Darwin, Brisbane, Perth, Batemans Bay, Melbourne and even Singapore to attend.
Captains from the year group, Gill Armytage and Michael Pisasale, and vice captains Matthew Braine and Donna Jefferies were in attendance.
Organiser Mrs Jefferies said it was the ‘‘perfect weekend’’ with plenty of highlights.
‘‘It was fantastic and the numbers that turned out were great,’’ she said.
‘‘The school tour was fun; it was very interactive and there were lots of laughs.
‘‘Some even remembered where they use to sit and got photos in their old classrooms.
‘‘Lots of people haven’t been back for the whole 20 years so they really enjoyed seeing how the school has changed.
‘‘They were really impressed with the communications and IT set-ups like the interactive white boards and the home economics industrial kitchen, but I think the music room was the biggest stand-out.
‘‘Peter (Humphries) also did a ‘where are they now’ of past teachers – basically anyone called out a teacher’s name and he could tell us what they are up to now.
‘‘We also had a breakfast cooked by current students as a fundraiser for their USA trip, organised by Peter Hupfield, Matt Kiley and Alana Parker.’’
Mrs Jefferies said she had already received positive feedback from guests about the event and the town.
‘‘We had 70 people attend the Saturday night function at the Golf Club and enjoyed sitting out in the beer garden catching up. We also had a photo booth which was awesome.
‘‘There were about 40 who came to the Globe on Friday and 50 people at the Exchange.
‘‘It was a really memorable weekend and people are already asking to have another reunion at 25 years. Some were even talking about coming back for the Blues & Roots Festival at Easter.’’
