Deniliquin dads kept busy for this year's Father's Day.By Tyla Harrington
Dads had plenty to do on Father’s Day in Deniliquin on Sunday.
Between the annual Father’s Day Market at Pretty Pine and entertainment at the Deniliquin RSL Club, there was something to please all dads.
A record crowd attended this year’s Pretty Pine Father’s Day Expo and Market, which was held on Sunday at the Pretty Pine Recreation Reserve.
While exact numbers are still being determined, Pretty Pine Ground Committee member Ian ‘Bluey’ Turner estimated between 4000 to 5000 people went through the gates, towering over last year’s record of 3000.
He said it was with thanks to the ‘‘beautiful weather’’ that record numbers were reached.
‘‘The weather couldn’t have been better, it was just a fantastic day,’’ Mr Turner said.
‘‘It’s the biggest crowd we’ve had.
‘‘There were about 60 stalls and the RAAF Roulette airshow (which also featuring four Russian Yak planes from Echuca and Tyabb) was very relaxing .
‘‘Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves, the bar ran dry and ice-creams sold-out.’’
The funds raised on the day are still being totalled, Mr Turner added.
He said Ron McKenzie, fresh back from the world paragliding championships in Turkey, dropping in was a highlight, while Bernard Clancy’s horse-drawn merry-go-round was also a huge attraction.
The day also featured a dog jumping competition, followed by Jack Russell dog races, children’s races, a jumping castle, spinning wheel and a local quiz competition.
As part of the major raffle a Typhoon Tool Chest valued at more than $1500, a 50-inch LG plasma television valued at $949 and a Waeco Cool 45L Ice-Box and dressed lamb valued at more than $450, was raffled on the day.
The Deniliquin RSL Club also had a major giveaway for dads on Sunday, with Mathoura’s David Eddy winning a 116cm flat screen television.
David, whose grandparents are club members, was there with his family for the special luncheon, and dining with more than one person meant his meal was free.
Deniliquin RSL entertainment and promotions coordinator Georgina Connell said about 100 people took advantage of the deal.
‘‘We had a lot of families coming in, including three generations,’’ she said.
