Cystic fibrosis ride stops in Deniliquin

Victorian Masonic Motorcycle Association members rode into Deniliquin on a fundraising ride, to be met by two grateful cystic fibrosis sufferers.

By Cass Savellis

Deniliquin cystic fibrosis sufferers Aaron Simmons and Jamie Chattaway were the first two people to welcome the Victorian Masonic Motorcycle Association (VMMA) into town on Friday.

Both men know the effects of cystic fibrosis (CF) all too well, and appreciate the fundraising efforts of the Masonic bikers who revved into town around midday.

The 10 members were taking part in a three-and-a-half day ride, leaving Melbourne on February 28 and riding more than 1100km through Rutherglen, Deniliquin, Cohuna and Queenscliff to raise money to support the fight against the disease.

‘‘It’s a worthwhile event ... they’re helping us out and raising money for things that we need,’’ Aaron said.

‘‘They were really nice people and offered to come back to Deni and help with any other CF events in future.’’

‘‘Fundraisers like these put awareness out there of people in regional towns that have CF, and the effect it has on our family and friends,’’ Jamie said.

‘‘It was excellent ... we need all the help we can get with funding.’’

This was the VMMA’s fourth bi-annual ride for the Cystic Fybrosis Victoria (CFV) foundation.

All trips are fully funded by members, meaning all funds collected go straight to the charity of their choice.

They collected donations during the ride and the event culminated with a charity auction in Queenscliff on Saturday.

While the exact amount has not been finalised, VMMA president Gary Power said the ride has raised over $16, 000 for CFV.
