Deniliquin Ute Muster ambassador Billy Brownless was impressed with the muster after attending the two-day event on the weekend.By Tyla Harrington
When Billy Brownless arrived at the Deniliquin Ute Muster late on Friday evening, he didn’t know what to expect.
But the former Geelong footballer turned AFL media star was super impressed to say the least.
Brownless has been busy promoting the event at every opportunity in the lead up to the 15th anniversary event.
‘‘I love it now that I’m here and seeing it for the first time,’’ the former Jerilderie junior told the Pastoral Times on Saturday.
‘‘It’s been very good and I’m very impressed with how big the crowd is and how big the crowd is. The people are certainly down to earth and like a good time.
‘‘I’ve gone from the VIP area, which seems to be a nice place, and then I went over and had a few in the Bundy Bar and that was different,’’ he said with a laugh. ‘‘They were enjoying themselves’’.
‘‘Everyone loves the muster and the great thing is that everyone’s friendly and happy and there’s no trouble because they all police themselves, they look after one another. There’s a few that have had too much to drink but they’re all happy.’’
Aside from the overall ‘‘great atmosphere’’, Brownless, who happily posed for photos and signed autographs in the VIP section on Friday and Saturday nights, was also blown away by the music.
‘‘Grinspoon were really good,’’ he said on Saturday morning.
‘‘I loved the Sunny Cowgirls, and Russell Morris was very good.’’
Brownless was spotted at the circlework arena and the wood chopping event, and also mingled with guests in the Bundy Bar.
On Friday night he ate dinner with fellow former AFL stars Leigh Colbert and Scott Cummings in the VIP tent. He also spent a fair amount of time at the muster with his brother, Anson, and both the Brownless boys were seen at the Globe Hotel on Saturday lunch time and the Edward River Hotel later that evening.
Brownless said he had ‘‘really enjoyed’’ his new role as a Deniliquin Ute Muster ambassador and would certainly encourage others to attend.
‘‘Being a local boy and growing up in Jerilderie it’s been really good to be an ambassador.
‘‘I’ve met some old friends that have come up and said ‘g’day’ .
‘‘If I get invited back I will definitely be coming.
‘‘I don’t know if I can see myself staying out in the paddocks though,’’ he said with a laugh.
While it might not be Billy’s preference, Geelong players Trent West and Dawson Simpson and former Cats premiership ruckman Brad Ottens did camp out in the ute paddock.
‘‘They come up every year and they’ve stayed out in the paddock .
Brownless spent a couple of years living in Deni when he was around the kindergarten age.
‘‘I couldn’t find it (the house), but that was 30 years ago. I visited the tennis courts where I won a mixed doubles. I reckon it must have been around 1980 at the Deni tournament.’’
