Year ends on a dry note

The 2011-12 summer finished with floods, but this summer is proving to be drier than average.

For most parts of northern Victoria and southern Riverina, rainfall in December is about half of the average.

Weather stations at Shepparton, Echuca, Deniliquin and Kerang have recorded dry Novembers and Decembers, while Yarrawonga was the exception with slightly above average rain in December.

In February and March this year, Shepparton received a total of 186mm as floods swept through Katandra, Numurkah and Nathalia.

For the last month of 2012, Shepparton received only 11.8mm, following 28.6mm in November. The December average is 45mm.

Echuca recorded only a total of 17mm for both November and December, with December’s average at 29mm. In December 2011, 67mm fell.

Benalla recorded 25mm, compared to its average of 42mm for December.

At Kerang only 15mm fell in December, while the average is 27mm.

Yarrawonga recorded 39mm in December, slightly above its average of 37mm, thanks to a big fall of 27mm on December 16.

No rain is forecast for the next week and temperatures are expected to climb to the high 30s or touch on 40°C on Friday or Saturday.
