Turn around for Kerang Charolais stud

A Kerang Charolais stud is back on the Beef Week circuit after a cancellation of last year's participation due to flooding.

By Cathy Walker

It was Beef Week day six, and Dennis Taylor was relaxing under a tree at lunchtime during a break between visitors to the Taylor family’s Allednaw Charolais stud just west of Kerang.

Twelve months ago the scene was vastly different.

‘‘We had to pull the pin on Beef Week — we weren’t flooded out, but we couldn’t get access to the cattle,’’ Mr Taylor said.

Thus this year became Allednaw’s first opportunity to showcase its stock at Beef Week — and a worthwhile opportunity it proved.

‘‘We’ve sold a few bulls and had some interest in cows and calves, so we’re pretty happy,’’ Mr Taylor said.

‘‘People thought the cattle looked well and the types we’re breeding is on the right track.’’

He said while they thought the flooded country the cattle returned to after the floods could have been ‘‘buggered’’, the opposite had proved the case, with some of the most inundated providing the best feed.

Not that Mr Taylor was suggesting a serious flood was a good strategy for growing grass.

‘‘I don’t know that we want that much (water) again,’’ he said.
