SPC Ardmona sackings in new year

Seventy SPC Ardmona maintenance staff at the Shepparton processor have been told their jobs will be replaced by contract labour by May next year.

Seventy SPC Ardmona maintenance staff at the Shepparton processor have been told their jobs will be replaced by contract labour by May next year.

Damian King from the Electrical Trades Union said the announcement, coming between Christmas and New Year, was one of the most incredible things he had ever seen from any management.

‘‘It’s all to do with SPCA’s bid for Federal Government funding and giving the appearance of some sort of change being implemented, Mr King said.

“These workers are being sacrificed.

The workers were told the news this morning.

Mr King described it as unprecedented and a ‘‘massive festive season kick in the guts’’.

An SPC Ardmona spokesperson said employees were aware of the critical and urgent need to transform their business and the majority responded in practical and financial ways to lift productivity to help secure the company’s long term in future in the Goulburn Valley.

‘‘SPC Ardmona has been assessing its work practices for many months, to identify significant improvements in productivity.

‘‘Today, as a part of the labour productivity review, 73 employees in the maintenance and trade function at SPC Ardmona, who had been previously advised their positions were under review, are to be made redundant,’’ the spokesperson said.
