Well-known dairy auctioneer and cattle breeder Brian Leslie’s bid at the Shepparton dairy show was a success — his Pooley Bridge Robust Felicia 58 won Inter-breed Senior Champion Cow.
Mr Leslie’s Pooley Bridge Windbrook Pansy 10 won Junior Champion and his animals also won the top prizes in the Holstein-Friesian classes including the Senior Champion Holstein (Pooley Bridge Jasper Rose 19), Reserve Senior Champion Holstein (Pooley Bridge Robust Felicia 58), Best Holstein Udder (Pooley Bridge Robust Felicia 58) and Reserve Best Holstein Udder (Pooley Bridge Jasper Rose 19).
In awarding the Senior Champion Holstein, Phil McKenna said Pooley Bridge Jasper Rose 19 had amazing dairyness with a wide frame and tremendous udder, including lovely teat placement.
‘‘She’s a cow you’d love to work with,’’ Mr McKenna said.
Girgarre’s Nicholson family won the Most Successful Jersey Exhibitor.
Their Jugiong Petunia 5574 won Senior Champion Jersey Cow and Jugiong Leonie 6223 won Best Jersey Udder as well as Intermediate Jersey Champion.
In awarding the Senior Champion Jersey Cow, Todd Wilson said Jugiong Petunia 5574 had tremendous capacity.
Tatura’s Michael Tuhan was pleased the family’s Riversleigh Tulip 10 won Senior Illawarra Champion and Riversleigh Kitkat Flower 14 was reserve. Judge Matthew Henry said the winning Illawarra displayed dairyness throughout including great openness and capacity.
Mr Tuhan said Illawarra breeders had brought high quality animals to the Shepparton Show.
Dairy show co-ordinator Pat Nicholson said although the number of entries was down across the dairy breeds for a total of about 100 animals, the quality of cattle entered in the Shepparton dairy show was still very strong.
‘‘People are tending to bring only their very best animals and a number of cows that won their classes at the Royal Melbourne Show,’’ Mr Nicholson said.
Again this year, there were no Guernseys, Brown Swiss or Ayrshires entered.
Mr Nicholson said there were a number of reasons for the decline in entries.
‘‘The silage season started a bit later this year and people are caught up doing that,’’ he said.
‘‘And people don’t have time to put in to shows.’’
There were only two calves entered in the Tatura Milk calf-rearing competition, which one-month-old Bumbles led by Renee Anderson, 13, won.
