Not waving, jumping for our national day

There was no Australia Day flag-waving for a dedicated band of Goulburn Valley jumps enthusiasts who turned out in the heat for the Northern Victorian Show Jumping Club’s January training session.

It was a low-key scene at Shepparton’s Hunter Reserve, with coaches and riders using the day to show young horses the ropes of showjumping.

Taking turns around the course built on the sand arena, the potential stars of the future looked at the spooky shapes and colours and built up confidence as one by one they cleared the obstacles.

Fence heights began at just 40cm and unlike in a competition situation, there were no rules such as three refusals and you are eliminated.

But in the words of famous American Olympic coach George Morris, what training is all about is ‘‘hundreds of small jumps, constantly repeated’’.
