Grain spills after truck crash

Tonnes of grain cascaded onto the Goulburn Valley Highway when a truck came to grief last week.

By Geoff Adams

A truck driver says he was shaken up, but feeling more for his bosses after a dramatic crash that resulted in tonnes of grain being spilled on to Goulburn Valley Hwy on Monday last week.

Nagambie police Leading Senior Constable Jason Woosnam said three trucks from the same company were carrying grain from NSW when a car stopped on the highway just north of Nagambie about 12.30pm. The car caused a B-double truck, which was in front of the grain trucks, to stop.

Leading Sen Const Woosnam said one grain truck veered to the left and another to the right, while the third jackknifed.

The driver of the third CJ Haulage truck said his brakes locked up, causing the trailer to jackknife into the air, crash into the trailer in front of him, and spill 24 tonnes of grain across the road.

‘‘I’m still upset and shook up, but I feel more for the bosses,’’ Ken, who did not want to give his last name, said.

‘‘It happened inside 10 seconds, but it seemed shorter. All I can remember is the brakes locking up.’’

Toni Kelly was sleeping inside the cabin of the second truck while her colleague drove; she was thrown from the bunk when the crash occurred.

‘‘I didn’t want to get out of the truck,’’ she said. ‘‘I didn’t know what I was going to see.’’

No-one involved in the crash was injured and the car involved left the scene.

The spillage caused the north-bound lane of the highway to be closed for about two hours.

Grain is cleaned up on the Goulburn Valley Highway near Nagambie.
