Deniliquin Show returns

A new-look show is being planned for Deniliquin.

With the return of Deniliquin Show on March 2 and 3 comes the return of the Riverina Shearing Championships.

The popular championships are just one part of a new-look show for 2012, which will be held at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park.

The shearing competition will run from 9am on Saturday, March 3, and shearers from around the region — including reigning champion Luke Zoch — will compete for prizes in open, intermediate and senior sections.

As well as the shearing competition and traditional show attractions, the revamped Deniliquin Show will incorporate a field day type of atmosphere.

The new field day section has attracted plenty of interest, with more than 30 exhibitors so far from throughout the district.

New P&A Society president Luke Harrington introduced the field day option to help save the struggling show. He said the idea was about getting people to the show, by giving them what they wanted.

‘‘It will create more interest and bring people into the town,’’ he said.

It will also give livestock exhibitors something to look at while they are at the show.

Mr Harrington said other rural aspects of the show would run in conjunction with the field day.

The sheep, dairy cattle, beef cattle and wool judging will all be held once again. Local secondary school agricultural students will take part in the competitions, including the dairy contest with cattle from Willow Dell Jersey Stud.

The show will also incorporate a working dog competition.

For more details about the show competitions, phone Mr Harrington on 0457513516 or show secretary Karren Petersen on 0437878630.

For information about the shearing championships, phone steward Brian Sullivan on 0429815816.
