Call for input from Aborigines on catchments

The Murray Catchment Management Authority wants Indigenous input on catchment issues.

By Cathy Walker

Murray Catchment Management Authority has called for five Aboriginal people to form the Murray Aboriginal Technical Group.

The group will meet four times a year and its purpose will be to represent and provide advice to the CMA on relevant Aboriginal issues, assist with the development of policy and strategic direction in relation to Aboriginal matters, build relationships and identify priority natural resource management actions.

Applicants are required to bring at least one of these skills to the table:

Aboriginal cultural heritage knowledge;

Ability to network with a wide range of community groups;

Sustainable natural resource management knowledge;

Communication/engagement and networking skills;

Connection to the Murray catchment;

Leadership and teamwork.

Murray CMA said from time to time, the group may be provided with information from sources in both the CMA and Aboriginal communities that was of a confidential or culturally sensitive nature, for example sacred sites, verbal reports and draft documents.

‘‘This information is not for general circulation in the broader community, and members must be prepared to maintain this confidentiality until Murray CMA and/or the MATG approves the release of material for community information and/or comment, or otherwise,’’ it said in the terms of reference for the group.
