Unique Relay For Life fundraiser draws curious stares

Specially decorated canoe raises more than $1000 for cancer research

By Jess Craig

Kylee Donkers and James Leonard certainly drew some curious stares on Thursday as they floated down the Murray River.

With their canoe and outrigger decked out with the Australian flag, a Relay For Life banner and a specially created pair of gigantic pink breasts — complete with nipples and bikini top — Kylee and James were easy to spot.

The husband-and-wife team were raising money and awareness for Cobram-Barooga Relay For Life.

It is the first time the couple have taken part in Relay For Life and they have their own team — Dutch Thunder Ranch.

‘‘Relay For Life is an important cause and one we’re proud to be part of,’’ Kylee said.

‘‘We are raising money for all types of cancer, but particularly breast cancer, as that has touched my mother and our family.

‘‘My mum, who is my best friend, was diagnosed with breast cancer about three years ago.

‘‘She was lucky to catch it early and she’s now living cancer free.’’

Kylee and James floated from Thompsons Beach on Australia Day, making stops at other beaches on the way to Tocumwal.

‘‘We had our collection tins out and we had a bit of fun with people, saying that we’d flash the boobs at them if they gave us a donation,’’ Kylee said.

‘‘We took our three dogs along for the ride and we stopped off at Weiss Beach for a barbecue lunch before continuing on our way.’’

Kylee and James said it is an unfortunate reality that these days, most people had lost someone to cancer, or know someone the disease has affected.

‘‘That’s why the Dutch Thunder Ranch Team will be walking and raising funds for those we have lost, those who have fought and won, those who are still fighting and those who may need to fight in the future,’’ Kylee said.

‘‘Every little bit helps and hopefully in the future we won’t need to walk for the latter because those very special people out there who are working towards a cure will have found one with the help of the money that we raise by doing such thing as Relay For Life.’’

Relay For Life is still searching for volunteers to help at the event on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1. If you can offer any help, phone volunteer co-ordinators Ken and Brenda Alexander on 58722667 or Brenda Clarke on 58721419.

James Leonard and Kylee Donkers piqued the interest of river-goers on Thursday.
