More than 350 people and 23 teams will relay for 24 hours this weekend in a show of support for people fighting cancer and cancer research.

The third Cobram-Barooga Relay for Life, at Cobram Showground on Saturday and Sunday, aims to add to a running total of money raised for cancer research and support through Cancer Council Victoria.

About $250000 has been raised in the Cobram-Barooga event’s preliminary two years.

Relay for Life is an overnight community event during which teams participate in a relay-style walk or run. The event is part of a national campaign.

Cobram-Barooga chair manager Kate Horner said 16 survivors and 73 carers would be the ‘‘guests of honour’’.

She said a candlelight ceremony starting about 8.30pm on Saturday was an emotional tribute to the lives lost to cancer and to those who are fighting the disease.

‘‘The community are really supportive (of relay) and have been supportive every year — they continue to surprise me, especially with the amount of money we’ve raised,’’ she said.

The relay starts at noon on Saturday and ends at noon on Sunday.

A range of entertainment and food stalls will be available.
