Rapist rumours quashed

BREAKING - Rumours on social media regarding a rapist on the loose in Cobram are completely untrue Cobram police say.

By Jessica Grimble

Cobram police have quashed rumours within the community that a rapist who breached a supervision order by assaulting his partner and then going into hiding is in Cobram.

Detective Sergeant Marcus Boyd of Cobram CIU said local police had been in contact with investigators in Melbourne, who have confirmed they are confident the man is not in the Cobram area.

‘‘Police in the country have access and are aware of the investigations in other areas,’’ he said.

‘‘We are always vigilant and would act if required.’’

Det Sgt Boyd said police had visited schools and assured them there was no safety risk to children.

He said people should disregard the rumours, particularly prominent on social media, which he said has no substance.

The man has spent time in jail and was released on a supervision order. Melbourne police believe the man is in hiding in Melbourne suburbs, where he has connections.
