New town clock falls victim to vandals

Much-maligned clock set for new hands just weeks after it was built

By Elise Beacom

Vandals have targeted Cobram’s new town clock.

The clock, which reportedly also runs several minutes fast, had a set of hands stolen some time last week.

Moira Shire Council infrastructure services director Aaron Drenovski said the internal mechanism of the clock face, facing High St, was damaged.

‘‘The other clock face continues to function. Council are awaiting replacement parts,’’ he said. ‘‘The hands have been removed until the mechanism is replaced.’’

Mr Drenovski did not comment on how much it would cost to replace the clock hands.

The clock itself cost Moira Shire Council ratepayers more than $36000.

Meanwhile, Katunga resident Liz Duggan has tracked down the two memorial plaques which accompanied the old town clock.

After looking at photographs on the Heritage Victoria website, Ms Duggan found the plaques, which feature the names of locals who fought in World War I and II, mounted out the front of Barooga Sports Club.

According to historical records, the Memorial Clock Tower was erected by the APEX Club in 1958 as a memorial to the men and women of the district who died during the two world wars. It was also adopted as a memorial for APEX member Doug Robinson who drowned in the river the same year.
