Year 10 St Mary’s of the Angels Secondary College students met with local employers as part of a Beacon Foundation Polish Program at Nathalia Recreation Reserve last month.
Beacon Foundation employees tutored the students on how to give themselves the best chance of success in an interview.
Student Georgia McKay of Cobram said she already had a solid plan for the future — but she gained a lot from chatting to local business people about what they looked for in an employee.
‘‘I want to become a fully-qualified horse trainer,’’ she said.
‘‘I have been riding horses since I was 10 years old and that’s what I am most passionate about, so that’s why I want to make a career out of it.
‘‘I am already doing my first year in Equine Industries online through (Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE).
‘‘Then I will need to go to the Geelong agricultural college, once I’ve finished school.’’
Georgia has a part-time job at Woolworths in Yarrawonga and said the job helped her gain more skills and gave her more confidence.
‘‘It’s my first job. It really helps with people skills and I feel like I am less shy than when I first started,’’ she said.
Nathalia and District Hospital chief executive Leigh Giffard, Moira Shire Council community development officer Frank Malcolm, IGA Nathalia manager Shane Cooper, GV Water people and development co-ordinator Samantha Hobbs and Ryan Meat Company manager Linton Ryan were some of the representatives to speak with students.
